With Jildon taking his 7th gold, he gives us the theme and bonus to start off the new decade!



So allow me to elaborate: the theme is sequels and prequels. Therefore, any game that was spawned off a title is fair for the mixing! For example, Resident Evil does not count, but all of the sequels and Resident Evil Zero counts. Super Mario Bros. does not count, but all of the games that have come after it are fair. As always, if you have any doubt, post in the thread and we'll get it cleared up for you!

And the bonus is...



I think that's pretty self-explanatory, but just to reiterate: if you put a donk on your remix, you get the bonus. Now would be the time to see if you can tastefully make a mix that uses the elusive donk!

Mixing begins when you read this.
Mixing ends on January 27th at 11:59 PM EST (8:59 PM for the PST-ers).
Voting begins as soon as the songs are uploaded to the site.
Voting ends on January 31st at 11:59 PM EST.
Rinse & repeat.

After much research I have inferred that "to put a donk on it" is to make a song danceable in a club setting, typically by adding that deep bass hit (often an electronic kick drum) that more often than not just keeps metronomic rhythm.
The part I speak of is the first "piece" the philosopher in the following video mentions in his breakdown of techno songs in general: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwZwkk7q25I

Thusly, one could refer to this part of the mix as the "Donk" which gets put on the song. For example, in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsCXZczTQXo, the "Donk," as it were, starts at 0:34. Not to be confused with the bassline.

Now then, I had seen on this very forum a little while back (i think wario kong posted it?) a topic about donking, which linked to a site that had metal and other songs donked, which was accomplished by first speeding up the song and then applying the donk as explained before.
I believe the speed thing was to keep the donkbeat from being too slow, as looking on youtube for donk remixes returned nothing of the sort, but did turn up plenty like the following pop-donks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8E2yOhaYOPQ


in sum, make your remix in a non-techno style, then add a techno beat.

Jildon, does that sound like an acceptable definition for your bonus?
or would you prefer the uber-ambiguous wherein nobody or everybody receives the points and thus this month is based entirely on votes?

Technically, according to your rules, Super Mario Bros. would count, as it was spawned off of Mario Bros. from the arcades, which, itself, is a follow-up to Donkey Kong. Not in the story sense, but in a series of games, it is.

Though Super Mario Bros. was the first in the series of "Super Mario Bros." games, it's not the first in the series of Mario games.

Perhaps you want to edit the rules for this one to "direct sequels/prequels".
